Tourism is now beginning to show signs of recovery after being in the doldrums for a long time. Visitors are showing renewed interest in Cameroon which, admittedly, is not among the cherished tourist destinations of Africa. In 1998, about 200,000 tourists flocked to the country against 92,966 in 1990, representing an increase of 125% in less than ten years!
This renewed interest stemmed from the incentive measures put in place during the past years regarding tourist promotion and security as well as the upturn in the global economy.
Among non-residents booked in accommodation establishments, the nationals of countries of the CEMAC (Central African Economic and Monetary Community) area account for 25% of lodgers, followed by the French, 24%, and other Africans. There has also been an upsurge in Americans, Germans, and British arrivals these past few years.
