 This has exacerbated over the years due to the degradation of wetland vegetation in this region and its environs. During the dry season (unlike before), the wetlands completely lose water and their surfaces harden and crack (see photo 5). This is common in rice fields which have just been gotten rid of rice.
            Concerning water quality, it can be inferred to have changed in terms of its chemical content. If we base on the surface area occupied by rice fields in the Ndop flood plains, it is possible to deduce the quantity of chemical fertilizers that are directly used in the wetlands. By the year 2005, the U.N.V.D.A. had transformed up to 1,531.12 hectares of wetlands into rice fields. During the growing seasons, there is the application of several tons of chemical fertilizers on these fields as will be seen later on. Due to this factor, the waters of the wetlands have been highly contaminated. This has led to the rapid growth of water weeds in some areas and algae (e.g. spirogyra) in others. Alga bloom and eutrophication are responsible for the dark greenish and deoxygenated nature of wetland waters. These areas have a low biodiversity in terms of aquatic species as justified by fishermen whose catches in such areas are low. Photo 6 is an example of a section of water whose appearance has changed due to rapid alga bloom and water weeds.
