Theme: THE DEGRADATION OF WETLANDS AND ITS SOCIO ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS IN NDOP CENTRAL SUBDIVISION, NORTH WEST PROVINCE CAMEROON

Page 25

FIRST RESULTS
WETLAND DEGRADATION IN NDOP CENTRAL SUBDIVISION:  TRENDS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS

The degradation of the wetlands of Ndop Central Subdivision was better perceived through diachronic analysis made on variables like the surface area occupied by wetlands, the previous state of these wetlands, the biodiversity(fauna/flora) and all aspects linked to the waters of the wetlands( like the turbidity/ water quality and drainage patterns). This section will address issues related to wetland degradation as well as factors that account for such changes. This section also sets out to validate the hypothesis that “wetlands have probably been degraded from Ndop Central Subdivision due to anthropogenic factors”. The section will be constituted of two main sections; the first section will address issues linked to wetland degradation meanwhile the second will look at the factors that account for the degradation of wetlands from the study area.

From a global point of view, wetland degradation could be either triggered by physical or anthropogenic factors. The later is the reality in Ndop Central Subdivision because before and up till 1978, the Ndop plain as a whole had an extensive natural vegetation cover. The existence of this flora cover is justified by a number of physical factors. The gently sloping nature of the topography lends itself to the predominance of extensive wetlands which mark the end of small streams; taking their rise from a Northern chain of hills (e.g. the Oku Mountain range, the Ngoketunjia hill, 1500 m to extensions of Sabga, 1639 m).The south is
