Theme: THE DEGRADATION OF WETLANDS AND ITS SOCIO ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS IN NDOP CENTRAL SUBDIVISION, NORTH WEST PROVINCE CAMEROON
Page 52
The name of this subdivision carries the connotation of its centrality within the Ndop flood plains as a whole and the Ngoketunjia division in particular. To understand the notion of centrality of this region, it is important to understand the force of attraction this area exerts on its neighbours. This attraction is materialized through the movement and settlement of people into the area through migratory flows. It is worth mentioning that such movements into the area are spurred up by pull factors which will be examined in detail.
The notion of a central place was studied by authors like Walter Christaller who is the author of the central place theory. According to him a central place relative to another, is that area which has a number of services which cannot be found elsewhere in a given region under consideration. Due to such services, the centre polarizes the population from its neighbourhood (Whyne C. et al, 1979). This is evident when looking at the ethnic composition of some villages in the area like in Bamunka, where over 43% of its population are settlers from other regions of the North West and western provinces, (Wana, G.N, 2003) .The centre is the core meanwhile the outskirts are the periphery. The periphery depends directly on the core.
This idea fits within the context of Ndop Central Subdivision which has a good number of services which cannot be found within the perimeter of the Ngoketunjia division and its environs. Table 14 is an identification of some pull factors which make Ndop Central Subdivision a privileged destination for migrants.
