to rather migrate towards human settlements. This is believed to expose domestic birds to wild bird species which are sometimes infected. The H5N1 strain of bird flu has been held responsible for the death of over 200,000,000 birds between the years 2004 to 2006.visit link>>>
With increasing concerns over wetland degradation and its associated problems, several recommendations have been made towards the wise use of their resources. Such recommendations can be found in research carried out by the Ramsar Convention Bureau (2000) in its handbook No 6 on the wise use of wetlands and by WWF (2004). In these reviews, actors are encouraged to participate towards the sustainable exploitation of wetlands by “integrating wetland management into national policies”, Larson (1993) , maintaining the ecological character of Ramsar sites through measures on the resource base of wetlands(Costal et al.1996),making an inventory of all national wetlands(WWF,1993) and creating a data base on the state of world wetlands. A combination of these strategies is creating positive results in some parts of the world although some countries are far from changing their attitudes towards wetland management.
1.4.5. BACKGROUND ON THE STUDY AREA
Ndop central subdivision has often been a focal point of research due to its location within the Ndop flood plain and the Upper Noun basin. The origin of its people and their ethnic diversity has also created a centre of attraction. The area has an abundance of literature on issues like rice cultivation, agro-pastoralisim, its ecosystems and soils. Issues on wetlands are also becoming a focal point of research.
Nouvelot et al, (1971) carried out studies on the hydrological network of the Upper Noun basin. Studies were carried out on several soil types and discharge rates of several streams in the region. Other issues linked to vegetation types and human settlements in this region were also addressed.
The practice of transhumance in this zone is seen to be favoured by climatic factors and above all the luxuriant wetland gramineous species. This activity is seen to alternate between the wetlands of the plain and the hill slopes, depending on seasonal variations (J. Boutrais, 1974 and Ngwa. 1985). The intensification of this activity is today seen to be having negative impacts on the wetlands of Ndop Central Subdivision (Bongadzem, 2006).
