Theme: THE DEGRADATION OF WETLANDS AND ITS SOCIO ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS IN NDOP CENTRAL SUBDIVISION, NORTH WEST PROVINCE CAMEROON

Furthermore, the construction of the dam led to the introduction of new aquatic species in this region. The large Clarias spp (¨Njukoh¨ or mud fish as locally called) is a species which feeds on other small fish species (Green .N.P et al. 1990). This fish was introduced into the lake and it has spread to other areas. Interviews reveal that they are regularly caught in villages further than the reservoir into which they were introduced. Their presence can be best appreciated as the introduction of a new species into an ecosystem which maintained an equilibrium that has been tampered with. Being a predator on small fish (like Tilapia sp.), in the event of an explosion in their population, heavy losses will be recorded in the population of aquatic species which are lower on the food chain.
