Theme: THE DEGRADATION OF WETLANDS AND ITS SOCIO ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS IN NDOP CENTRAL SUBDIVISION, NORTH WEST PROVINCE CAMEROON

Figure 15 b:Bamendjin-Bambalang area after dam construction.
Green extensions show extent of water over about 333km2. All the vegetation under this region is completely submerged.

From a cross section of these factors, it can be understood that wetland degradation in this region is as a result of population increase which has led to other activities; a combination of which are leading to the rapid degradation of wetlands from the region. Figure 16 is a sum total of these factors in action on the wetlands of Ndop Central Subdivision.
The figure is a representation of the region cut up into regular grids (tessellations or rasters) of 12 km2 each. Within each tessellation, the main kinds of human activity which dominate have been highlighted under the headings; habitations/ infrastructural development, transhumance, farming and the Bamendjin reservoir zones. These zones correspond to areas of action for these activities. Only four factors have been singled out because they can be well spatialised. Based on these anthropogenic factors, it was found out that some zones which contain wetlands combine all these factors, coupled with others which can not be represented. It is on these bases that a map on hotspots of wetland degradation was created. Such areas although still contain wetlands, have been highly degraded and/or transformed to other land uses which do not reflect their original ecological characteristics.
