agropastoralism, fishing activities, community development, ecological and land use practices on wetlands and on sociological and historical issues. However, wetland degradation has never been addressed as a focal point in any research carried out in the area. Being a key concept which has been addressed in several Ramsar sites of the world, this research will serve as a baseline study for N.C.S.D. It will also establish a link between wetland degradation and the resulting socio-economic and environmental impacts.
1.4.6: OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
This study has as main objective, “analysing wetland degradation in Ndop Central Subdivision and assessing subsequent implications”. From this principal goal, the secondary objectives are to;
- evaluate the rate at which wetlands are being degraded in the area, as well as identify factors which account for wetland degradation,
- asses the environmental and ecological implications of wetland degradation in this region.
- assess the socio-economic feedback of wetland degradation on the population of Ndop Central Subdivision,
- propose alternative wetland management strategies which are sustainable enough to ensure the protection and regeneration of this ecosystem.
1.5 .THEORITICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY
The key concepts in the study include the concept of a wetland and that of wetland degradation. These two concepts fall under the broad canopy of the concept of an ecosystem. Today generally, ecosystems that are constantly exploited by man are faced by challenges, the principal one being that of degradation as is the case with wetlands in some regions of the world. These will be seen detail in the following section.
1.5.1: Wetland:
The key concept in this study is that of a wetland. Several authors have proposed different approaches to the concept which more or less differ from each other. If a first look is taken at this concept, it is immediately noticed to be a portmanteau word, originating from “wet” and “land”. This gives the rapid impression of land that is wetted or
