Theme: THE DEGRADATION OF WETLANDS AND ITS SOCIO ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS IN NDOP CENTRAL SUBDIVISION, NORTH WEST PROVINCE CAMEROON
Page 3
From the North, an extension of the Oku mountain range culminates to the highest point in this plain, which is the Ngoketunjia hill, with a height of 1500 m. From this northern flank of hills, is the low lying expanse of flood plains which extend to Bambalang, culminating to an altitude of about 900 m. Based on the two extreme altitudinal values, this low lying plain has an average altitude of 1200 m above sea level and is drained by numerous small rivers and streams which account for the very existence of this wetland.
This research will be carried out based on analysis from 1963 to 2007.The period around the 1960s is a good baseline for this research since wetlands in this region were still in tact. Thus, interviewing people who lived in this area around this period will furnish us with information on the state of wetlands before being degraded. Besides, this period predates major projects like extensive rice cultivation, irrigation schemes, the hydro-electric reservoir at Bamendjin and an extended communication network. Furthermore it is possible in this research to obtain aerial photographs of 1963 for the whole region, which will aid in diachronic analysis with photographs and satellite images of later dates. From this date, it is also possible to get respondents on the field who are alive and experienced changes that occurred in the area. The year 2007 obviously marks a period during which field observations started in the region towards the realisation of this work.
Between these two periods, there have been several remarkable changes that occurred on the wetlands; spurred up by other changes in the area. In 1967, the B.P.D.A (Bureau de Dévéloppement de Production Agricole) was created and later in 1970, the Upper Nun Development Authority (U.N.V.D.A) took over. These two schemes encouraged large scale agriculture in the area. In 1972, the Bamendjin dam was constructed and the expanse of its waters also flooded vast areas. Within this context of events, this region has been evolving administratively and finally attained the rank of a Subdivision in 1999. This temporal delimitation is therefore adequate enough to evaluate changes that have been occurring on the wetlands of Ndop Central Subdivision.
